ftwr has picked up another pile of fiber, working out an agreement with Zayo’s dark fiber division, Zayo Fiber Solutions. FiberTower will lease some 2,500 miles of dark fiber for the long term and has options for additional fiber leases. They will use all that fiber to fill out their wireless backhaul coverage, obviously, however there was no mention, however, of the geographical areas this particular deal covers.
This is ZFS’s largest foray into the public eye thus far since being born out of AGL Networks and supplemented with fiber from AFS and from the rest of Zayo’s dark fiber assets. Zayo itself is a major player in the fiber to the tower business, but as usual they don’t mind arming a bit of the competition as they make money either way.
One wonders though if FiberTower itself might be a target one day of Zayo’s M&A division. After all, Zayo even began offering antenna infrastructure services a while back, it’s not that big a stretch to see them supplementing their FTT footprint with extra coverage from microwave backhaul. And while FiberTower may have diluted its way out of immediate danger, they still have a substantial mountain to climb before they achieve self-sustaining scale. It could also be a way of going public, although I think they’d rather do a real IPO at some point rather than come in via the back door.
