Akamai to Power NFL.com’s Video Expansion, With Full Green Disclosure Of Course

Today Akamai (NASDAQ:AKAM, news, filings) announced that NFL.com has implemented its HD Network in order to bump up the quality of video delivered from its site this season.  That includes the site’s Thursday Night Football stream, more generally, the majority of all video content from the site.  Also, exclusive content for the NFL Fantasy Football game will be delivered at up to 3.2mbps.  Akamai has had a relationship with NFL.com for a while of course, this is mainly just tracking the adoption of the next generation of streaming in an effort to boost the league’s online presence.  But with the size of the audience, it’s clearly a nice position to be in for Akamai.

And what’s with the green part?  Well yesterday, Akamai was recognized by the Carbon Disclosure Project for ‘its focus on good corporate governance in relation to climate change’.  It’s not just Akamai of course, there’s been lots of companies out there proving how green they are lately.  Is it just me, or does all this backslapping about fixing the environment seem like a bit too much?  It’s not like carbon dioxide levels are going down just yet, we’re just getting better at counting it.  Or at least we’re getting better at having an intern hand-wave his or her way through a spreadsheet compiling a giant list of guesstimates that management can then quote as proof they are good corporate citizens.  It’s not like this stuff is audited…  But oh well, I guess it isn’t hurting anyone either.
