Ancotel Acquires LIDARC, Enters US Market

German datacenter operator ancotel GmbH has landed in the USA, or more accurately on Long Island.  They are announcing the purchase of the Long Island Data and Recovery Center (LIDARC), a colocation and interconnection facility located at 1025 Old Country Road in Westbury, NY.  They intend to develop the property into a major interconnection hub for transatlantic connectivity.  The official unveiling of both the facility and their plans for it will be tomorrow.

Now, ancotel is not a household name in the USA, but in Frankfurt they operate Kleyer-90 which is billed as the largest telecommunications node in continental Europe.  This is their first foray into the United States, but of course it is intricately linked to their European business.  The Long Island location is strategically near submarine cable landings, and like various NJ locations is well positioned to take the load off Manhattan’s space and power limited facilities.

One interesting plan I have heard that ancotel may be following up on is to enable direct connections from Europe to South America via those cable landing stations, completely bypassing New York City itself and thereby reducing complexity and decreasing latency.  The data center space continues to be a rather dynamic place.
