Tuesday Roundup 5/25: Verizon, Orange, Global Crossing, Level 3

Lots of news today, here’s a rundown of some of the announcements by larger companies:

Verizon Global Wholesale says that its VoIP minutes grew by 200% in 2009, as the service turns 10 years old.  Of course, ten years ago Verizon (NYSE:VZ, news, filings) actually wasn’t pushing VoIP services much, but rather it was MCI-Worldcom which they later acquired – but that’s a whole different story.  In 2010 the Verizon division plans to add new services such as Caller Provided CLI which is a feature sought after by the call center business.

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has renewed its Business VPN contract with Orange Business, the international arm of France Telecom (NYSE:FTE, news, filings).  MSC is involved both in cargo and in cruises, operates over 400 ships, and employs some 30K people.  Additionally however, MSC is trialing Orange Business’s Maritime Satellite Service on one of its ships, which fully integrates that Business VPN service with satellite access.  I’ve never really thought about how to handle internet access on one of those giant cruise liners (which isn’t surprising because I’ve never been one one), but that does seem like the right way to go.

glbc is adding streaming to its videoconferencing portfolio.  The international IP solutions company is working with ON24 to include highly scalable and feature-rich, on-demand video-streaming.  They will be leveraging ON24’s Webcast Center platform and Virtual Show solution.  Additionally, Global Crossing has added a VPN connection to ON24, which will allow them to leverage ON24’s services directly while maintaining QOS cost effectively.

And finally, Level 3 Communications (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings)‘s Business Markets group in DC has announced a contract with EtherSpeak.  They will be providing a suite of outsourced voice services, namely wholesale voice termination, 800 calling, and VoIP enhanced local services, which will help EtherSpeak extend its coverage area and streamline its business.  Sounds like a wholesale markets contract, but with a customer in a regional market that might have slipped past a nationally focused group – as it should be.
