I have added two more lists of competitive metro fiber maps to my collection: one for the Maryland, Delaware, and Washington DC Metro area, and one for the southwestern states of Arizona and New Mexico. There is of course lots of fiber around Washington DC, and a major part of it is in northern Virginia out in Reston, Herndon, McLean, etc. I chose to follow the lead of politics and lump that part of Virginia with DC, the rest of the state will be grouped with the Carolinas. Why? I had to divide it somewhere and this seemed to make the most sense, but I might move it around later if I change my mind. Phoenix has a healthy stable of fiber providers, but the rest of the southwest is as much a desert for fiber as it is for water. At least, so far as I can find…
I hope to take advantage of the slower news cycle over the holiday season and complete this map series by the end of 2009. Well, at least the first pass through anyway. Who knows, maybe my efforts will lure some of those laggards who don’t publish maps yet to do change their minds.
Oh, and a reminder to those out there who want to add or update their company’s statistics on my metro fiber and on-net building list – I will be updating this in about a week.
