FLAG is Back

An iconic brand has been reborn in the world of subsea cable operators. Global Cloud Xchange has announced that it is rebranding, and will now be known as FLAG.

The original FLAG stood for Fiberoptic Link Around the Globe, and that’s what they set out to build back in the dot-com boom. When the boom turned to bust, FLAG became part of India’s Reliance Communications for a couple of decades. Now, after separating from Reliance a few years ago under the umbrella of 3i Infrastructure, the company is now reclaiming that heritage as they look for the next stage of growth.

These days, privately held subsea cables are driven more by hyperscalers than companies like FLAG. However, FLAG says it has recently signed investments in enhancing its Middle Eastern and intra-Asia subsea infrastructure. I doubt the company plans to solo-build a new loop around the globe or anything, but it should be interesting to see where they put their resources in the next few years.

FLAG is looking to establish a more modern position in the sector as the AI phenomenon reshapes everything. The company’s platform leverages 7 subsea and 6 terrestrial cable systems, mixing leased capacity and a range of services at layers 2 and 3 to interconnect key data centers worldwide. The company’s managed services business will hold onto the GCX brand under the name GCX Managed Services.
