An upgrade, a new PoP, some datacenter investment, and a subsea cable project gets funded:
DE-CIX has tapped Nokia to upgrade its exchange footprint in the northeastern US. They will be using Nokia’s optical solution to boost DE-CIX New York’s connectivity to 400GE with the ability to support 800GE in the future. The upgrade will also leverage Nokia’s ROADM technology to be able to reroute waves at the optical layer. In addition, the exchange has been redesigned to connect its 10 data center facilities in a ring topology.
EXA Infrastructure and Digital Realty are teaming up for infrastructure on Crete. EXA has announced a new PoP on the Greek island within Digital Realty’s HER1 facility. HER1 is billed as Crete’s first carrier neutral facility and is scheduled to go online soon with an initial capacity of 1MW. EXA will support connectivity from the facility back to Athens and on via terrestrial fiber to Vienna and Zagreb.
OpenAI’s Stargate project continues to make waves in the infrastructure world. In a LinkedIn post, OpenAI CFO Sara Friar detailed a bit of the funding plans they have, with an initial $100B of investment out of some $500B total over the next few years backed by the lies of SoftBank, Oracle, and MGX. Those are huge numbers, and it will be fascinating to see where they go. First will be an expansion in Abilene TX, but the company says it is evaluating sites in Pennsylvania, Oregon, and Wisconsin.
And the Barracuda submarine cable project has lined up a major backer. Teset Capital has signed a strategic agreement with Valencia Digital Port Connect to support the project to the tune of €100. Barracuda will connect Valencia and Genoa, and envisions both a cable landing station and an edge data center. The cable itself would span 1,070km and feature 12 fiber pairs, and would have branching units for future extension into other locations, and the CLS would have room for up to 4 subsea cable systems.
