More Hollowcore for euNetworks

The pan-European fiber operator euNetworks has completed another upgrade project, this time within its euTrade network platform. euTrade is focused on the financial community, leveraging optimized, ultra-low latency fiber routes between key financial exchanges and other destinations. The upgrade leverages more hollowcore fiber, improving connectivity to the Euronext data center in Bergamo, Italy from both London and Frankfurt.

Hollowcore fiber is one of the more unique next generation technologies available to internet infrastructure projects. Because the core is air and not glass, latency is just two thirds what it is within regular fiber. But of course it is also more expensive and difficult to manufacture, deploy, and operate. That’s why it has been showing up in financial networks, which offer premium pricing in exchange for lower latency.

This is euNetworks’ 5th deployment of hollowcore within its euTrade network, but it is their first within their longhaul infrastructure. Prior deployments have focused on metro links, and the longest example was a 40km link two years ago. Exactly which leg of their infrastructure was involved was not mentioned, but this new upgrade is their longest hollowcore deployment to date.

euNetworks finished off 2024 with the overbuild of additional key FLAP-D routes, and has been focusing tightly on optimized, modern fiber infrastracture for next generation applications. Hollowcore fiber is another piece of that puzzle, and I wonder if it will find additional application in other markets over time — both at euNetworks and at other network infrastructure providers.
