Int’l Bytes: euNetworks, Sparkle, Avelacom, Ciena

Four items of international network news:

euNetworks has completed yet another of its Super Highway buildouts. This time they have unveiled a new fiber route between Paris and Lille, taking a diverse route that avoids known bottlenecks on the approaches to Paris. euNetworks has been steadily overbuilding the FLAP-D region with brand new infrastructure, and this is part of a broader buildout from Paris to Amsterdam.

Sparkle has signed an MOU with Fincantieri to better surveil and protect its submarine cable assets. The international service provider and the shipbuilder will be working together to improve security for subsea infrastructure. Such security has been in the news lately after those cable cuts in the Baltic recently, although exactly what these two companies have in mind is not yet clear.

Avelacom has expanded its low latency network into Mexico. They have added tew new PoPs in Mexico with the help of KIO, and upgraded existing PoPs in Miami, New York, Ashburn, and Chicago. The links utilized newly built routes between the US and Miami, although details on which ones were involved were not given. They will be targeting traders with cross-border needs between US and Mexican financial markets.

And KT has tapped Ciena to power services beyond 400GbE. After a recent trial between Seoul and Busan that achieved 1.2Tbps and another between Seoul and Cheonan that hit 1.6Tbps, they will be deploying Ciena’s WL6e and supporting technology. The deployment will happen in the first half of 2025.
