Colo Bytes: atNorth, MDC, Microsoft

December 16th, 2024 by · Leave a Comment

Three data center expansion items of note to catch up with.

atNorth has acquired some room to expand in Sweden. The Nordic colo provider has purchased a 30-hectare (74 acre) plot in the Sollefteå Municipality, in Hamre Industripark in Långsele. That’s a couple hundred miles north of Stockholm, where atNorth opened its SWE01 site a couple years ago. atNorth has been busy lately building out infrastructure across the Nordic region, including expansions in Iceland and multiple locations under development in Denmark and Finland.

MDC has announced plans to expand across the border and into Mexico for the first time. They will be building a new data center in Querétaro, which has emerged as the country’s key data center hub. MDC-QRO will offer a high performance interconnection hub, with support from partners including Bestel, Axnet, Vivaro, TotalPlay, C3ntro, Fermaca, Gold Data, and IENTC. Initial plans call for 10,000 square feet of operational space and 2MW of power. Construction will begin early next year.

And Microsoft says it will be investing in some significant data center capacity in Western Australia. They will be deploying an Azure Extended Zone to the city of Perth by mid 2025. Details of what the expansion entails have not been specified, but local industries and government agencies are already moving to leverage the new infrastructure.
