Monday Roundup: Cirion, IslaLink, Nokia, Wyyerd

A new subsea cable, a subsea and terrestrial speed trial, and a FTTH upgrade:

Cirion Technologies is building a new submarine cable system between the Americas. SAC-2 will be part of the Google-supported Firmina system and will complement the existing SAC and PAC cables that date back to the Global Crossing days. The cable will land in Myrtle Beach SC, Las Toninas, Argentina, and Praia Grande, Brazil.

IslaLink and Nokia have been trialing nextgen subsea connectivity in the Mediterranean. They have successfully tested Nokia’s PSE-6 technology on the IONIAN cable system. IONIAN connects Italy and Greece, and the two achieved 800Gbps on the subsea span of 330km as well as 1Tbps on the system’s two terrestrial routes in Greece.

And Wyyerd Fiber has kicked its FTTx network up a notch in San Diego CA. They are now offering 8Gbps in all their service areas across San Diego County. Wyyerd only just entered San Diego at the start of 2023 and most recently moved into the ‘East County’ region.
