Five interesting bits of news from around the world:

Ciena and Telstra have achieved a new speed record down under. They conducted a trial using Ciena’s WL6e technology alongside live traffic on Telstra’s infrastructure between Melbourne and Canberra. More specifically, it was on Telstra InfraCo’s central route with endpoints at the Lonsdale Exchange in Victoria and Barton Exchange in the ACT. The trial achieved 1.6Tbps on a single optical channel over a 700km span, which the two companies say is 200km longer than previously recorded.

Nokia has two wins in Asia already this week. On the fiber side, ICG will be using Nokia’s gear to upgrade its DWDM network in southeast Asia. The move will enable 400G per wavelength between across Thailand from the Cambodian border to Malaysia. Meanwhile, in the air Nokia has announced a strategic partnership with Zain Iraq. Zain Iraq will be deploying microwave technology from Nokia in the south of the country, including E-band solutions.

Sparkle and Telsy have teamed up for a bit of quantum security. In a recent Proof of Concept, the two TIM Group companies along with QTI Quantum Telecommunications Italy have successfully implemented Quantum Key Distribution on an existing network. The work was done between two data centers in Athens over Sparkle’s infrastructure, Telsy’s Antares platform, and optical gear from Ribbon.

And Vapor IO says it will be collaborating with NVIDIA to put AI to work in the wireless arena. The two will be launching the AI Aerial platform just in time for MWC out in Las Vegas. NVIDIA’s platform leverages its AI-RAN technology as well as Vapor IO’s edge infrastructure to enable ultra-low latency services. Next generation capabilities like autonomous vehicles will benefit from the ability to dynamically shift workloads between edge data centers with real time optimization.
