Four bits of news from around the world before the start of Labor Day weekend here in the US:
Arelion and Ciena have successfully hit 1.6Tbps on a live network field trial. They put Ciena’s WL6e gear and related technology to work between Equinix Ashburn and Telxius’ cable landing station in Virginia Beach. Arelion plans to roll out Ciena’s gear across its network, achieving reduction in space and power per bit with higher spectral efficiency.
NetIX has added another connected exchange to its global peering ecosystem. The division of Neterra Group has added IX.br Fortaleza, which joins IX.br’s other exchanges in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. NetIX now has 35+ other IXPs connected across 220 on-net locations in 65 countries.
Hurricane Electric has marched into another data center in southern Europe. They have deployed a PoP in the Greek city of Thessaloniki, or more specifically at Synapsecom’s SNC-1. It’s HE’s fourth location in Greece, and second in Thessaloniki. Synapsecom’s facility offers 1,000 square meters with expansion potential for 3.5x that.
And Scala Data Centers has lined up what it bills as the largest renewable energy supply agreement in Latin America. With the help of Serena, the data center provider will tap into the Assuruá 4 and Ventos da Bahia 3 wind farms in northeastern Brazil. The partnership will kick off in January of 2025, enabling Scala to meet the demands of hyperscale data centers as they prepare for those AI workloads.
