Monday Roundup: Nokia, Google Fiber, CityFibre, SmartCIC

With the long weekend done here in the US, here’s a quick look at the news out to start the week:

Nokia and Google Fiber’s GFiber Labs are testing 50G PON. The two teamed up for a successful demonstration over Google Fiber’s existing network infrastructure, building upon 25G PON technology. It’s the second such trial Nokia has run, but the first in the US. It’s not clear when 50G PON will be needed, but 25G PON has already been deployed by 12 operators worldwide including, yes, Google Fiber.

The wholesale provider CityFibre says that has connected the first customer of Vodafone’s 2.2Gbps symmetrical service. The customer is in Cambridgeshire and is a ‘lecturer in film’ and transfers a lot of video that his previous 80Mbps-down-18Mbps-Up was increasingly inadequate. CityFibre is rolling out 10Gbps-capable networks in the UK as well.

And SmartCIC says its new AI algorithm was 97% accurate in predicting cellular performance across Washington DC. Data captured from their ‘Drive’ and ‘Walk’ initiatives was fed to 30+ ML models backed by proprietary AI. The result was a predictive AI engine that can tell providers the quality of connectivity at a given spot within the city.
