The European fiber operator euNetworks announced the addition of a new metro fiber network market this morning, bringing their total across the continent to 18. The move follows last spring’s acquisition of 1,660km of fiber and duct across Belgium from a utility company, transforming those assets to better fit alongside euNetworks’ existing presence throughout the Benelux region.
They assembled the new metro network via overbuilding some of the purchased duct, adding some more purchased cable and duct, and pulling fiber between key spots in the city. In all they put together 41km of duct and high-fibre count network that connects an initial 5 key data centers and hooks into their longhaul network to reach other markets. Additional data centers and other potential destinations will follow over time.
Of all the major European capitals, Brussels seems like it has gotten the least attention from the infrastructure community over the years at least in terms of publicity. It’s been like the eye of the FLAP hurricane, but with densification and the rise of the edge the opportunity has been growing for sure.
