Metro Bytes: Segra, GPC, Zayo, FirstLight, Uniti

Some quick catchup on metro and regional network news from around the US and in this case Mexico too:

Segra is taking a dip into the world of motor sports via a partnership with Toyota Racing Development. With its network infrastructure in the eastern US, Segra will provide TRD with communications services as it puts cars on race tracks such as in Costa Mesa NC. They also get their brand on GR Cup cars starting this weekend.

Great Plains Communications is upgrading its network infrastructure out in the Midwest. They have deployed Ciena’s WaveLogic5 Nano, Coherent Routing, and MCP domain controller technologies to increase capacity and reliability in support of wireless backhaul, DCI, and layer 2 VPNs. GPC has deep network across Nebraska with extensions into all neighboring states.

Zayo is teaming up with Fermaca Networks down at the US/Mexico border. Fermaca is developing a new longhaul route in Mexico through the center of the country down to Queretaro and Guadalajara that includes plans for a diverse border crossing through El Paso. By hooking into Zayo’s infrastructure in Texas, the growing data center clusters in Queretaro will have better connectivity options to destinations across the US.

FirstLight has picked up a manufacturing customer up in New England. Wirebelt Company of America will be leveraging FirstLight’s data center, internet, and dark fiber to power its new facility in Bedford NH, just outside of Manchester. The deal is an expansion of an existing relationship, and aims to support what will be a more energy efficient manufacturing facility overall.

And Uniti is delving deeper into lit fiber services. They have deployed a 100G+ MPLS core throughout the company’s southeastern footprint in Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama and Florida. The upgrade will support 10Gbps Ethernet backhaul for its tower backhaul business, with plans to upgrade at some 2,700 locations over the next three years.
