Two companies with extensive fiber across Europe have teamed up to upgrade the high profile route within the Channel Tunnel. Colt won a 25-year deal to operate the infrastructure within the tunnel a year and a half ago, and EXA’s participation will help them monetize that deal further.
The infrastructure is the only dry path connecting the UK with continental Europe, passing under the English Channel on the path between London and Paris. EXA says the upgrade will add 288 fibers of G.652D optical cable on a 66km span. Both EXA and Colt are upgrading their infrastructure on either side of to match that newer fiber and provide a homogenous nextgen capability between the two key data center markets.
It’s EXA’s second substantial investment between London and Paris in the past year. They were also a key participant in Crosslake’s new subsea route that went live a year or so ago. The Channel Tunnel was completed back in 1994 and the fiber through it is some 25 years old. Now that we are in the hyperscale era and fiber count has become important again, the time has definitely come for this upgrade.
