Ciena Scarfs Up Benu, Tibit

November 22nd, 2022 by · 1 Comment

As Thanksgiving weekend approaches, Ciena has made a pair of inorganic moves. The optical and software vendor has acquired Benu Networks and signed a definitive agreement to acquire Tibit Communications.
Benu Networks specializes in active subscriber management, with a virtual broadband network gateway heading up a portfolio of cloud-native software solutions. They are based out of Burlington MA, and have been working with Ciena for some time.

Meanwhile, Tibit Communications is focused on next generation PON technology, delivering a micro-pluggable transceiver for integration into carrier-grade Ethernet switches. Ciena was already an investor in the Petaluma CA-based company as well as its largest customer.

By making this pair of acquisitions, Ciena is consolidating both the technologies and the associated talent under its own umbrella in order to prepare an expansion on the residential connectivity front. PON-based FTTH deployments certainly are cropping up all over the place these days, and Ciena clearly sees an opportunity to increase its piece of the pie.
