Lightpath Takes On Miami

November 3rd, 2022 by · Leave a Comment

Lightpath’s geographical expansion reached outside the northeastern US for the first time yesterday.  The company has announced an entrance into an entirely different metro fiber marketplace: Miami, Florida.

Lightpath’s plans call for a 135 route mile fiber buildout in in the Miami region.  The initial piece will be 55 miles of subterranean, high-count fiber in Miami’s Central Business District.  That piece will be ready in January 2023.  The follow-up buildout will add another 80 route miles, including two rings to the north and west of of the CBD that will be ready by April.

The first two data centers on-net will be 15 NE 9th St and 36 NE 2nd St, with six others coming online as the buildout continues.  Longhaul and cloud connectivity will be available first, with local peering targeted for next year.

Of course, the New York metro area has always been Lightpath’s main focus.  However the company has been investing substantial resources in its expansion up into Boston over the last year and a half.   With the addition of Miami, clearly Lightpath feels confident in its ability to adapt its business model to other metro areas — even ones more than a thousand miles away.  Which might be next on the menu?

The company is funding the buildout with cash on hand.  They didn’t mention any particular large customer driving the move, but I’m sure they have something in that vein behind the curtain.
