Tuesday Bytes: 123Net, Green Mountain, Verizon

September 20th, 2022 by · Leave a Comment

Some FTTH, a new data center, and some 5G innovation:

123Net is expanding its FTTH reach up in Michigan with a new deal with Veridian Communities. 123Net will be providing 10Gbps to Veridian at County Farm, which is 14 acres of land in Ann Arbor that was in the not so recent past the Washtenaw County Juvenile Detention Center. Veridian is building a mixed-income, net-zero-energy community on the site powered by solar energy and resilient storage.

Green Mountain has more expansion plans in northern Europe. The Norwegian colocation provider will be adding 20MW of capacity and a new 2-storey building on its campus in valley of Rjukan, Telemark. The waste heat for the facility will be used by Hima Seafood’s trout farm keeping the fish warm, I guess. The buildout will cost &euro100M and should be ready in March of 2023.

And Verizon is making inroads in the R&D community. They have teamed up with the University of South Carolina to launch a 5G Innovation Hub. The new hub will be housed in the university’s McNair Center in Columbia. There researchers will be looking at how 5G Ultra Wideband might be best use in the manufacturing realm, among other projects.
