Some data center projects, an FTTH provider creation, and the closing of a key acquisition:
Vantage Data Centers’ plans down in South Africa have officially come to fruition. This morning the infrastructure operator announced the delivery of the first facility on its Johannesburg campus. It’s 2 stories, 130 square meters, and 16MW of critical IT capacity. Meanwhile, they have also broken ground in Frankfurt on a similarly sized facility at their campus there.
Telefonica has tapped two partners to launch a new FTTH company in Spain. They have established Bluevia Fibra S.L., 45% of which will be owned by a consortium of Credit Agricole Assurances and Vauban Infrastructure Partners. The deal values Bluevia at €2.5B or so. Bluevia will take aim at less populated parts of Spain and will offer wholesale FTTH access to all providers. The company starts with 3.5M homes passed and looks to expand that to 5M over the next two years or so.
Ericsson finally got through all the detail work necessary to close its acquisition of Vonage. The onetime VoIP pioneer has now officially become part of the Swedish giant’s overall CPaaS/UCaaS/CCaaS plans. Ericsson hopes to open up 5G network capabilities via APIs on a broad scale as they look to help monetize the infrastructure everyone is busy building everywhere.
And over in Germany, P3 Logistic Parks has some big data center plans in the works. They have taken over the former Großauheim barracks in Hanau from the Bundesanstalt für Immobilienaufgaben (Institute for Federal Real Estate). The plan is to develop the property into a large data center campus of some 200,000 square meters and 180MW. Hanau is 25km east of Frankfurt, which of course is one of the continent’s main data center hubs.
