Fresh off its inorganic expansion to the northeast into Boston, Lightpath is taking aim in the opposite direction as well. This week the NYC metro area based fiber provider revealed an organic entrance into the Princeton, New Jersey area.
The buildout initially adds 54 route miles of fiber, offering connectivity to four additional data centers in the area. From that starting point they will be able to tackle some 400 enterprises, research & education customers, and government entities.
Once tightly focused on NYC and northeastern NJ to the tune of 18K route miles and 12K on-net buildings, Lightpath has been increasingly aggressive with its footprint expansion since Altice USA sold a 50% stake to Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners last year. In June they made a surprise move into the Boston metro area via a series of purchases, and in July they took aim at adjacent areas in the NYC borough of Queens.
What each of these moves has in common is what they don’t have in common, which is overlap with the footprint of the Cablevision/Altice USA cable footprint. Now that they have struck out independently, perhaps other destinations on the I-95 corridor will follow.

Sort of a caterpillar coming out of a cocoon kind of thing here? Wonder what’s next? Interesting.
