Thursday Roundup: American Broadband, Sonic, ADTRAN, Megaport, Versa, Fujitsu

Two bits of FTTH news from opposite ends of the spectrum, some SD-WAN, and a vendor win up north:

There was some interesting inorganic activity in the rural FTTH space. American Broadband has announced the acquisition of the fiber assets of BNT Broadband and WayneNet. The deal will give American Broadband a leg up on the rural FTTH market in Wayne, Nebraska, complementing its presence in nearby Missouri as well as its reach in Alaska, Texas, and Louisiana. While small in scope, American Broadband is openly looking to roll up more assets of this type over the next few years.

Meanwhile, Sonic is making its move into Oakland, California. They are leveraging ADTRAN’s 10G Combo PON technology to expand their fiber reach into the second highest density market in the San Francisco metro area. We hear a lot about the rural FTTH marketplace, but there are plenty of urban areas that need better service as well, and ADTRAN’s gear will support customer connections up to 10Gbps.

Megaport is making a move on the SD-WAN marketplace with some help from Versa Networks. The Network-as-a-Service provider has launched availability of the Versa’s Secure SD-WAN technology, which is part of Versa SASE, across the Megaport Virtual Edge. Enterprises can leverage Megaport’s SD-WAN to better connect to destinations across Megaport’s ecosystem.

And Fujitsu Network Communications has won a bit of business up in Canada. CBC/Radio-Canada is using their 1FINITY optical networking platform to connect its remote stuidios around the country to the Olympic Studio and production center in Montreal. The upgrde will support growing traffic demand on CBC/Radio-Canada’s infrastructure from live streams, on-demand video, and mobile apps.
