Fresh off last month’s announcement of a deal to buy zColo from Zayo, DataBank has made another inorganic move. This week they revealed a $30M strategic investment in EdgePresence.
EdgePresence is a relatively new player in the data center sector, and specializes in small, modular data centers placed under cell towers or on enterprise campuses, etc. They are deploying at a dozen locations of Vertical Bridge, which like DataBank is owned by Digital Colony, which seems everpresent these days.
Both companies operate at the ‘edge’, but the edge these days covers a lot of territory and the two companies are more complementary than anything else. The combination of DataBank’s enterprise-focused colo, zColo’s interconnection footprint, and EdgePresence’s modular capabilities gives them the ability to take on the whole range of edge opportunities.
Other than the investment, nothing much will happen immediately. EdgePresence CEO Doug Recker and his existing team will continue to run the company, albeit now with input from DataBank.
