A major piece of data center infrastructure is changing hands. EQT Infrastructure has announced today an agreement to acquire the edge data center provider EdgeConneX.
EdgeConneX operates 40 facilities in 33 market around the world. They started off in the US, where most of those facilities are of course. But in the last couple of years they expanded to European markets like Amsterdam, Warsaw, Dublin, and Munich and to South America in Buenos Aires and Santiago. Their facilities have always been focused on meeting the demand for interconnection closer to the end user than you could get from major dta center clusters.
EQT will of course bring greater resources to bear than the company’s current ownership, a group led by Providence Line Partners. EdgeConneX’s access to those resources should give them the financial firepower to take their model to new markets and to add capacity in their current ones.
The purchase also fits quite well with EQT’s overall approach, and will sit alongside their stake in Zayo in the EQT INfrastructure IV fund. Yet, somewhat surprisingly, EQT hasn’t really played much in the data center space until now, but rather has focused on fiber when it comes to infrastructure. Perhaps more such assets will be on their target list going forward.
Financial details of the deal were not given. The purchase is expected to close sometime in Q4 of this year.
