Sparkle, the international arm of Italian-based TIM Group, has moved to light up its subsea fiber along the western coast of the Americas. To take care of the technology side of things, they have tapped Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme gear.
Two months ago, Sparkle invested in a fiber pair on Google’s Curie cable system, which connects Santiago, Chile with Los Angeles, California. That 10,476km system became ready for service back in November of 2019, featuring 4 fiber pairs each with an initial design capacity of 18Tbps.
Ciena’s WL5e technology enables 450Gbps per channel on Curie for Sparkle, giving them as much as 19Tbps on this growing bandwidth route as well as greater diversity. Sparkle has put a lot of resources into it subsea connectivity to and around Latin America in recent years. They also have three fiber pairs on Seaborn’s cable along the east coast of the Americas.
