The planned EllaLink cable between Europe and South America has a new branch in the works. The Government of Mauritania has signed an agreement to bring a bit of that capacity ashore to boost its global connectivity.
For those reaching for Wikipedia, Mauritania lies in northwestern Africa, with 90% of its land part of the Saraha Desert. It’s largest city is Nouakchott, a port on the Atlantic on the coastline between Senegal and the disputed territory of Western Saraha south of Morocco, which is likely where the additional branch of EllaLink will land.
EllaLink began its Marine route survey in May, and expects to go live sometime in 2020. It will connect Lisbon with Fortaleza with branches to Sao Paolo and French Guyana and terrestrial links to Madrid and Marseilles. In addition to Mauritania, it will also stop in Madeira and Cabo Verde along the way. Alcatel Submarine Networks is handling the construction.
