Zayo Plans Ohio Expansion

With its recent deal to go private still a few quarters off, Zayo is turning its attention to new buildouts and upgrades. On Friday they detailed one such project out in the Midwest, or more specifically the state of Ohio.

The Boulder-based builder of internet infrastructure wil be adding 300 new route miles of fiber in the northeastern part of the state, more specifically in Akron, Youngstown, and the area in between. These are areas in which Zayo already has a deep presence of course, and the new infrastructure will bring their total footprint up to some 3,500 route miles, including new diversity through Youngstown on the route between Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

Last month after a couple quarters of speculation, Zayo agreed to be purchased by Digital Colony and EQT in a $14.3B transaction. The deal followed a year in which the company struggled to meet growth expectations and was then besieged by rumors and criticism, and I think it’s clear everyone would rather get back to building fiber, colo, and other infrastructure as soon as possible.

Well, of course they never stopped doing that, but the focus certainly had shifted away from the main event.  So I expect we will hear more from Zayo on the fiber expansion front this summer.
