Tuesday Bytes: Southern Telecom, Hargray, Megaport

A few more interesting items from recent news that are worth noting:

Southern Telecom has sold some more dark fiber to the energy vertical. The Atlanta-based operator announced recently that it will provide a new dark fiber route between GTC’s fiber Backbone and Central Georgia EMC headquarters in Jackson. GTC is jointly owned by 38 of the state’s electric membership cooperatives, of whom Central Georgia EMC is one. It’s an expansion of an existing relationship between GTC and Southern Telecom, which itself is the fiber arm of industry giant Southern Company.

Hargray continued its own expansion in the state of Georgia this week. The regional provider has begun construction of a last mile fiber network in Conyers, Georgia, which lies about 25 miles east of Atlanta. The announcement follows another expansion into Covington just 10 miles further east as well as a recent purchase of Dark Fiber Systems in Jacksonville FL.

And Megaport has another new data center partner. Evoque Data Center Solutions will be using Megaport’s fabric to better enable its interconnection capabilities. Evoque is new to me, but is owned by Brookfield Infrastructure and operates 31 data centers in 11 countries on 4 continents. Initially they’ll be rolling out Megaport’s cloud connectivity in Allen TX, Mesa AZ, Ashburn VA, Lithia Springs GA, and Redditch/Birmingham UK.
