What does a global data center operator need for Easter? Another data center, obviously. Equinix made a small acquisition yesterday that boosts the company’s European footprint.
Switch Datacenters has sold its Amsterdam facility, AMS1, to Equinix for an all-cash price tag of €30M. The data center will be renamed as AM11. becoming Equinix’s 9th IBX in the Dutch capital, and its fifth in the southeastern region. Not sure yet why it’s AM11 and not AM9, if anyone knows the details please leave a comment below.
AM11 spans some 8,320 square meters currently and brings 250 cabinets of sold capacity to the table, with current room for 700 cabinets total and space to grow that up to 1,300 cabinets. AM11 will be tethered to AM7 nearby, quickly bringing its customers within Equinix’s ecosystem.
For its part, Switch Datacenters (easily confused but distinct from US-based Switch) still has two facilities in Amsterdam: AMS2 in Woerden at 5,500 square meters and AMS3 nearby AMS1 in the southeast at 11,000 square meters. They use a patented adiabatic cooling system to achieve a PUE of 1.04.
