DQE Communications will be building out some new fiber in rural Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh-based fiber builder and operator has won a deal with ARIN Intermediate Unit 28, which handles connectivity for a collection of school districts in the counties of Indiana and Armstrong.
After winning the RFP, DQE will be providing fiber to some 11 member school districts, consisting of some 42 school facilities as well as other locations and serving over 19,000 students. The districts had been depending on legacy infrastructure, with one of them having only a microwave connection.
Indiana and Armstrong counties lie to the northeast of Pittsburgh, on the northeastern frontier of DQE’s growing regional footprint. As a division of an energy utility, DQE has remained mostly aloof from the industry consolidation over the years, just building out steadily. Its network now spans 3428 route miles and hooks up over 1700 buildings over a footprint centered on Pittsburgh that now extends into Ohio and West Virgina as well.
