Friday Bytes: Sparkle, ROOT, NYI, Ciena

Three bits of data center news from three countries and an MEF 3.0 certification to finish off the week:

Sparkle has put some money to new ok new technology in Turkey this week. The International arm of TIM Group has deployed Lithium-ion batteries for UPS backup in its Istanbul data center. The move improves the data center’s leadership in green technology in the Turkish infrastructure market.

ROOT Data Center has plans for yet another expansion up in Montreal, Canada. They will be building a third data center at the company’s campus in La Salle to be called MTL-R1B. It’s a greenfield build that will add 10MW of capacity to the company’s inventory. Montreal is definitely hot right now, getting a lot of attention from the webscale guys.

NYI has expanded into one of New York’s most iconic data centers. They have taken up space in 60 Hudson Street via the acquisition of the data center assets of Sirius Telecommunications. NYI will be taking its hybrid solutions and managed services to the tenants of 60 Hudson, who will be able to reach them without inter-carrier cross-conect fees.

And the first MEF 3.0 certifications are starting to trickle out. In a blog post this week, Ciena says it has became one of the first to complete the certification. The vendor’s 8700 Packetwave Platform and 3926 Service Aggregation Switch were announced with the first group of certified products at MEF’s annual meeting in Nashville.
