Metro Bytes: WANRack, Comcast, FirstLight, Zayo

Four bits of metro fiber news from the past few days that are worth a look:

WANRack keeps racking up wins in the education vertical in the midwest. They have now entered the Illinois market to build out fiber for the Alton and Park Ridge school districts. The buildout consisted of 22 route miles of fiber hooking up 21 schools.

Comcast Business has been busy adding a bit more reach to its fiber network this summer. They have completed a $2M expansion into Maumelle, a suburb of Little Rock, Arkansas, and can now offer 10G and 100G connectivity to enterprise and government customers across a 20 square mile area.

FirstLight officially has a new private equity owner. Antin Infrastructure Partners has completed its purchase of the company from Oak Hill, Novacap, and Riverside. I’m curious whether Antin will continue the inorganic expansion path that FirstLight has been on over the last few years, acquiring Oxford, Sovernet, FLTG, and 186 to add territory from Maine to the shores of Lake Erie, or shift to a more organic footing.

And Zayo won another deal with a global cloud provider late last week that I managed to miss. The unnamed cloud provider is leasing space in Zayo’s One Wilshire data center in LA as well, some dark fiber from there to its corporate offices, and DIA and E-Line connections in other locations around the US.
