Another New Cable Planned for Lake Ontario

Crosslake Fibre, Metro Optic, and Utilities Kingston have unveiled plans for a new and unique fiber route hooking up the key markets of eastern Canada. The project will be part terrestrial and part under water, starting in Toronto and finishing up in Montreal via a diverse route.

The project will start out wet from Toronto, going under Lake Ontario for the first leg northeast to Kingston, where it will shift onto land north to Toronto and on to Montreal. Montreal has been a growing bandwidth destination lately, especially for webscale companies, and thus there is a need for greater diversity and raw dark fiber availability on this route.

Crosslake and Metro Optic have formed a joint venture, Maple Leaf Fibre, to actually develop the cable system. Maple Leaf will be partnering with Utilities Kingston, which will use the connectivity to further its own local internet infrastructure market. Bringing in diverse and plentiful fiber will improve their case when it comes to luring new data center projects and such. The fiber buildout is aimed to be complete in the second half of 2019.

Crosslake of course has another project already in the works connecting Toronto and Buffalo that crosses Lake Ontario, and this new build will no doubt re-use the landing station etc for that. They are also working on that cable from Long Island to New Jersey that was announced last year.
