This week DE-CIX offered some data points giving validation to the idea that demand for IX connectivity has been very strong lately. Whether measured by customers or connected capacity, the global IX operator saw very solid growth across markets worldwide.
In the company’s mature home market of Frankfurt, DE-CIX saw its customer count pass 800 with a 23% increase in connected capacity. Traffic itself busted through previous records to over 6Tbps. In its other German exchanges DE-CIX also saw 20% growth.
The raw numbers are still lower in the company’s expansion markets, but the growth rates are higher. In North America, DE-CIX saw 19.2% growth in its customer base and a 72% increase in connected capacity, while traffic rose 61.4% to 270Gbps. In Madrid, customer numbers were up 60% and connected capacity was up 145%. In Istanbul and the UAE, customer base increased 38% and 19%.
IX providers have been seeing new, sustained opportunities in markets large and small for some time now, and it’s about far more than peering these days. The evolution of the business model has been interesting to watch, and is of course still underway.
