Cloud Provider Taps Zayo to Achieve Triversity

February 15th, 2018 by · Leave a Comment

Zayo announced yesterday that will be supplying a ‘global webscale cloud provider’ with wavelength connectivity between two of the provider’s markets. The arrangement is taking advantage of existing Zayo infrastructure, and thus can be mobilize very quickly.

The solution brings the cloud provider triversity between a data center on the US west coast and another in the central region, and scales the overall bandwidth to 2Tbps of connectivity. Zayo won the contract in part because it has a fully unique route to complement the company’s existing other two routes.

Zayo recently announced plans for a new route south from Oregon to Reno, and while the target they mentioned was diversity along the west coast, it will perhaps also provide additional possibilities from the Pacific Northwest to the center of the country. That wasn’t part of this deal, since it won’t be built for a while yet of course.  But it does illustrate the ongoing shift in the driving force for longhaul fiber builds. Just as it is in the subsea cable market, the big content and cloud guys need things that weren’t envisioned even in the dot com era.  2Tbps is not a minor chunk of bandwidth.

As for who the aforementioned unnamed cloud provider mentioned might be, it’s not hard to come up with a shortlist (headed by Google, Amazon, and Microsoft) but there’s no way to be sure beyond that.
