Google Fiber Unpauses, Takes Aim at Louisville

April 28th, 2017 by · Leave a Comment

Last year Google Fiber stopped launching new markets.  A shakeout in their management team soon followed as did the purchase of Webpass, which indicated the reason lay in the promise/threat of new wireless technologies changing the economics of the last mile.  And then there was silence, until now.

The news yesterday was full of reports that Google Fiber is officially taking aim at Louisville, Kentucky.  They haven’t said much on their blog yet themselves, but Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer has confirmed publicly that the long-delayed project is kicking off, and with some new aspects.

Google is apparently adding fixed wireless and microtrenching to the mix.  The fixed wireless aspect matches previous rumors of a modified network design, and the microtrenching will get them off the poles that AT&T has been working so hard to keep them off of.  That’s all we know at this point, however, and frankly it’s not much.  Hopefully Google Fiber will be more forthcoming in  the weeks ahead so we can get a better idea what their new last mile design will be and whether their previous pace of rollouts will resume.
