Uniti Fiber is unveiling plans today for a new metro fiber expansion this morning in a market that rarely makes the national news. They plan to build out a fiber network in and around the city of Shreveport.
With a wireless provider in tow as anchor tenant for backhaul, Uniti Fiber will be adding dark fiber in the northern Louisiana city. They already serve a few towers there via leased Ethernet circuits that derive from PEG Bandwidth’s regional buildout six or seven years ago. But they will now be overbuilding that presence and reaching into key commercial areas and data centers, adding some 19,500 strand miles to their network in 144 and 288 count cables.
The expansion is rather similar in concept to Uniti Fiber’s recent expansion up in Rockford IL and the Quad Cities area last autumn. The company is clearly looking for a wireless-backhaul entry into underserved tier 2/3 cities within its existing regional footprint where they can add deep fiber and leverage their way into additional opportunities.
The expansion is also within the home turf of Hunt Telecom, which parent Uniti Group is in the process of buying right now for $170M. While that deal won’t close until summer, they aren’t wasting time investing more in their infrastructure in the region.
