Int’l Bytes: Colt, Seaborn Networks, NTT

Here’s some news from around the world that’s worth a look this morning:

Last week over in Europe, Colt launched a new enterprise service. They expanded their SDN capabilities with the launch of Ethernet On Demand services to enterprise buildings. It’s not just a few buildings either, but some 5,000 enterprise buildings and 200 datacenters spread across 11 countries in Europe. Those initial countries are Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden and the UK — the usual western European suspects of course. Colt has plans to expand the services to more of its footprint through the year, including into Asia.

And Seaborn Networks now has its cable ship in the water. The Île de Sein, owned by Alcatel Submarine Networks, has left France en route to the US with 8,200km of cable, 125 repeaters, and 5 branching units on board. After it crosses the Atlantic, it will start laying the cable for the Seabras-1 cable system between Wall, New Jersey and Praia Grande, Brazil. The cost of the cable will be $520M in all, with Sparkle kicking in some $300M for three of the six fiber pairs.

NTT Communications is looking to boost its cloud reach at home in Japan with a new partnership. They have announced a new strategic partnership with Virtustream and Dell EMC (Japan) aimed at delivering multi-tenant cloud platforms, including large-scale SAP. NTT supplies the data centers, network, and existing cloud platforms, Virtustream throws in its cloud technology and platform, and Dell EMC will be supplying the storage and converged infrastructure platform.
