Ok, I’m back from Metro Connect and mostly recovered, and it’s time to catch up on what else I missed from this week while on the road.  It’s a pretty long list.

Zayo picked up another enterprise contract earlier this week. An unnamed international law firm has tapped them for an E-LAN solution hooking up twelve sites internationally. Four of those are in Asia, and as part of the solution Zayo will be opening a new PoP in Hong Kong. Along with their new PoP in Singapore, it does appear that Zayo is making a concerted effort to move into Asia.

Mitel has also been busy in the Far East. The Beijing Rail Transit Control Center (TCC) will be using their unified communications solution to renovate the company’s communications infrastructure. The TCC operates Beiing’s subways, which move 12 million people a day and will be adding 186 new miles of fully-automated lines.

Ciena revealed some success in Appalachia on Wednesday. East Kentucky Network is deploying their converged packet-optical solutions and software as part of a network upgrade. EKN has some 375 route miles of fiber spanning 21 counties in Kentucky and is owned by five independent telephone companies in the region.

This week was quite busy for M&A closings.  TPG Capital finished up its acquisitions of RCN and Grande from ABRY for $1.6B and $650M, respectively. TPG is combining the two companies into what will be the 7th largest US cable company and plans to expand and enhance operations across the combined footprints.  And Everstream’s purchase of Lynx Communications Group is also complete, adding substantially to the company’s growing depth in Michigan.

Hudson Fiber Network has added another data center to its growing New York metro area fiber footprint. They’ve built out into Sentinel’s NJ-1 facility in Somerset, New Jersey. Sentinel’s customers will have access to HFN’s entire stack of network services from waves up through IP/MPLS. Sentinel boosted NJ-1 to 430,000 square feet a few years ago.

And ShoreTel is making inroads over in the Europe. They’ve expanded their ConnectCloud and related contact center solutions into the UK, and will be selling to the enterprise market through partners. The solutions have been available in the US for some 15 months now.

Finally, in Houston PS Lightwave has won a contract with WBL Services.  They’ll be providing high speed internet connectivity between the George R. Brown Convention Center and the media center at NRG Stadium.  It’s for the “Big Game on Sunday”, gee I wonder what they could  could possibly mean…
