Here are several interesting quick takes on news from the metro fiber sector:
Lumos Networks has found its next expansion target following the completion of its roll-out through Richmond to Virginia Beach. They have now launched their 25th enterprise market one state to the north, taking aim at Frederick, Maryland. The company has some fiber in Frederick already, but is now taking aim at the market specifically rather than merely as a piece of the overall DC metro area they happen to pass through.
Out in Utah, Comcast Business is aiming at the SMB market. They’ve teamed up with the Miller Business Resource Center’s Business Incubator at Salt Lake Community College. They’ve brought their fiber into the facility, offering gigabit connections as well as voice and video, to the 64 startups using or actually leasing dedicated space there.
And Unite Private Networks has expanded its Dallas network a bit further. They’ve brought the new ViaWest data center in Plano on net along side the already-hooked-up Viawest data centers at the Dallas Infomart and the Richardson Synergy Park. The Plano data center just opened this past autumn, and features 148,000 square feet of raised floor space.
