Akamai made an inorganic move this morning, announcing the acquisition of Concord Systems in an all-cash transaction.
New York City-based Concord is quite young, having gotten its start just two years ago. In other words, this isn’t about adding revenue but rather technology and talent. They have a software platform that provides a framework for data aggregation, filtering, and analysis for big data, especially the kind of data that comes from widely distributed sources.
That platform and the talent that produced it will be brought in house for Akamai, further diversifying its capabilities beyond the content delivery network at the company’s core. Akamai will probably have use for the technology within its CDN directly, as managing that infrastructure surely involves aggregating and processing lots of data from all those data caches around the world for both themselves and their customers. But the main use case mention involves the IoT revolution of course.
