CyrusOne seems to have some big plans for Chicago. After buying CME Group’s facility back in the Spring for $130M, the data center REIT has followed up with an adjacent land purchase.
CyrusOne has purchased 23 acres at 32W 130 Molitor Road in Aurora to go with the 15 acres of developable property they already had. They plan to develop the property over the next few years, integrating it into a shared ecosystem with the former CME Group data center and the 90-MW power substation nearby.
That will be more than enough to be going on with for at least a few years I’d think. I suspect we will soon hear about their actual pans for a new facility. CyrusOne sold some 3.4M shares of stock last month, and the first thing on the list of uses for the cash was to fund growth capex.

That 90 MW substation is their own. https://goo.gl/maps/mxqL5rnxTAs They’ve tapped directly into two different 345 kV lines going to the large substation nearby (east by 1/4 mile) Electric Junction. West, those two lines go to two nuclear plants and 765kv inter-regional transmission lines. East, Electric Junction connects to additional nuclear plants in addition to redundant connections to the previously mentioned nuclear plants.
Lots of diversity, few points of failure, great electrical planning.
Oh, and I can connect to their facility with microwave. 😉

Pages 24 and 25. Note that the Nelson – Electric Junction line has already been upgraded and a new diverse path from Byron (nuclear plant) is already under construction.
