Friday Bytes: Windstream, Sentinel, Level 3, Vertical Systems Group

Here’s some more metro fiber, data center, and Ethernet news from this week:

Windstream is on the move again with some more metro buildout news. They are expanding in the Chicago metro area, adding data centers and commercial buildings in the Downtown area and the Loop as well as in Downers Grove, Elk Grove Village, Lisle, and Naperville. They have plans for similar metro expansions in Atlanta, Minneapolis, Cleveland, and Philadelphia later this year.

Level 3 has expanded its NYC reach on the other side of the East River. The network operator has built out a new PoP in the ColocationGuard facility at 882 3rd Ave in Brooklyn. ColoGuard’s data center billed as the only such facility in the borough, featuring some 50,000 square feet of space. Manhattan gets the lion’s share of the love in NYC of course.

Sentinel has had some success pre-leasing phase II of its expansion in North Carolina. Of the 100,000 square foot, 100 MW they are building out, they have already leased out 25% of it. The expansion has been underway since Spring, and should be ready sometime in September. Virginia has been hot lately when it comes to infrastructure, and North Carolina could be next.

And Vertical Systems Group has posted its Mid-Year 2016 US Carrier Ethernet Leaderboard. Charter has taken over the third position behind AT&T and Level 3 but ahead of Verizon, following the TW Cable and Bright House Deal. It probably won’t keep it for long though, since XO has moved up to 7th ahead of Cox, and is still expected to join the Verizon family in a couple quarters.
