Zayo Buys Clearview

Zayo expanded its cloud and colocation footprint via a another M&A late last week.  The target this time was the data center operator Clearview International, which operated two data centers in Texas, in a $18.9M deal.

Clearview’s data centers are located in Dallas at 6606 LBJ Freeway and in Waco at 700 Austin avenue, and combine total some 30,000 square feet of space.  That extra square footage will complement the 66K that Zayo picked up more organically back in December in Dallas, and expands the Texas footprint of the company’s zColo division to seven data centers in all.

Zayo’s depth in Texas started getting bigger in a hurry after they won that big fiber-to-the-tower deal in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metro area last May.  I’ve always thought they’d eventually expand in the Texas market via fiber M&A.  Of all the major US fiber infrastructure regions, Texas’s markets may have the most remaining potential for consolidation.

But data center acquisitions remain Zayo’s target in the US, as the company chases growing hybrid fiber and colo demand.  In Canada and Europe, meanwhile, they are digesting significant new fiber assets (Allstream, Viatel) and looking to make more of them than their prior owners just as they have done so successfully in the US.
