Colombia Gets Pacific Fiber Access From Level 3

March 17th, 2016 by · Leave a Comment

Yesterday, Level 3 finished off a key project that its Latin American business has been working on for some time.  They have activated a new subsea cable landing on Colombia’s Pacific coast, bringing a branch of their South American Crossing cable ashore.

LEVEL 3 - COLOMBIA - NETWORK MAPThe new branching route stretches 300 kilometers undersea to the city of Buenaventura where it hooks up to 154km of terrestrial fiber inland to the city of Cali where Level 3’s existing Colombian footprint takes over.  Until now, submarine cables hooking up Colombia have landed on the Caribbean side, which is much more accessible than the narrow strip of jungle bounded closely by the West Andes mountain range.

The buildout was not an insignificant infrastructure project, and Level 3 has been working on it for two years.  In parallel, they also built out a data center in Cali, which just opened its doors in January of this year.  The additional infrastructure on a unique route will surely help Level 3’s overall ambitions in Colombia, one of the continent’s fastest growing bandwidth markets.
