Here’s a quick roundup of some news from around the world this week:
NTT has reached another traffic milestone on the Japan-US leg of its global IP network. They now carry more than 1Tbps across the Pacific ocean, the most of any internet backbone. That compares with the 1.5Tbps of traffic between Japan and the rest of the APAC region, and is powered by 100Gbps digital coherent technology on its PC-1 submarine cable system.
DE-CIX yesterday hit a milestone of its own yesterday. Their new Apollon internet exchange in Palermo is now operational. Located in TI Sparkle’s hub on the island of Sicily, the facility aims to provide an exchange point where European traffic intersects with that from Africa and the Middle East. Both Google and Limelight will be connecting and peering at the exchange.
ADVA says it has completed a 400Gbps trial of its data center interconnect technology over in Poland. The trial took place at the Poznan Supercomputing and Networking center over some 385km of fiber between Poznan and Warsaw using the live PIONIER research and education network. The solution transported data continuously at 16QAM for 14 hours without any block errors.
To bolster its cloud offerings, AT&T has teamed up with CSC. The two have developed a joint solution combining CSC’s Agility platform with AT&T’s NetBond, creating a ‘complete hybrid cloud management solution’. CSC’s technology allows them to work with multiple cloud providers, while AT&T’s VPN technology keeps everything nice and secure.
And Akamai has a new ally in the network and data center infrastructure world. They’ve teamed up with Internap, which will be offering Akamai’s cloud security and data center protection services alongside its own portfolio. Akamai will be Internap’s sole DDoS mitigation provider, amongst other things. Internap has lately been the subject of some speculation, after revealing that it is indeed considering strategic alternatives.
