Virginia has been getting some fiber attention lately, and it got another key intercity piece this week while I was off traveling this week. Dulles-based SummitIG has completed the construction of its brand new dark fiber route between Richmond and the key data center hubs of northern Virginia.
The new fiber route stretches 170 route miles, with much of it traveling along the Virginia DOT’s limited access routes and much of it underground along interstate 95. That’s not the usual route for fiber in the region, and thus adds new network diversity to the infrastructure along this section of the eastern seaboard while while cutting the usual latency between Ashburn and Richmond by some 25%.
SummitIG has also built out metro loops both in Richmond and in Northern Virginia to reach key data centers and other interconnection spots on either end. They have dedicated collocation shelters in Stafford and Ruther Glen along the way as well.
Now that they’ve got their flagship route done, I am curious to see where SummitIG points its construction teams. More metro reach on both ends and perhaps along the route generally I expect, but perhaps they will also be looking at other intercity routes in the region that could use some new options.
