Pacnet Taps OnApp For a New CDN

The APAC connectivity specialist Pacnet has built itself another CDN with some help from UK-based OnApp. They’ve deployed OnApp’s software solution to build out a self-owned and self-managed CDN across their own data centers and subsea links. Beyond their own footprint, OnApp’s federation then steps in.

Pacnet China network mapThis is the third significant move by Pacnet to add CDN capabilities to its portfolio. As far back as 2009 they tapped Internap’s CDN to do the job via a reselling agreement. Two years later, they were among the first to sign on with EdgeCast’s big carrier-focused expansion, licensing EdgeCast’s platform and joining its federation.

EdgeCast then became part of the Verizon world of course, which made it perhaps less attractive to other network operators. Or perhaps Pacnet just wanted finer control over the CDN capabilities given the rapid strides they’ve made with their own cloud connectivity infrastructure.  Either way, OnApp is their new CDN partner.  The buildout and migration process took just two months.
