All that new fiber on the east coast of Florida is making a few waves this month. Coriant and Allied Fiber revealed a new terabit per second superchannel transmission trial over the new infrastructure yesterday.
The trial demonstrated a 1Tbps transmission distance of more than 1,700km using a 368.7Ghz grid and placing it in 3 separate C-band locations. Coriant therefore was able to show greater spectral efficiency with a maximum capacity per fiber of some 13Tbps. With the 100G transition well underway around the world, we’ll surely be seeing vendors demo their candidates for the next step on the technology curve on a regular basis the next few years.
Allied’s new fiber route has brand new Corning SMF 28e+ fiber, which makes for a great testbed and showcase for the latest and greatest. Of course Allied’s new fiber route doesn’t go 1,700km yet, stretching the 360 miles from Miami to Jacksonville, so they clearly looped it a couple times. I’m curious how long it will take Allied Fiber to get the next leg up to Atlanta fully in place.
